Fan Poll: Grossman or Cousins With A Catch

One of the positions that the fans (maybe not the coaches) are talking about during Redskins Training Camp is the backup quarterback position.  The Skins used a 4th round pick to bring in a good Big Ten QB, Kirk Cousins, but they also signed fan favorite Rex Grossman to another year's contract.

The people in favor of Cousins at the backup spot want the Redskins to end the Rex Grossman era.  It has been proven in the past that RGI could help the team maybe win a game or two, but that the team has no Super Bowl shot with him at QB.  Should RG3 go down it would be more beneficial in the long run to have a young quarterback get some reps, instead of a so-so veteran at the end of his career.

That is a solid way of thinking.  And I somewhat agree.  But I pose to you this question:

If (And it is the biggest if ever) the Skins made the playoffs this season and RG3 went down with an injury in the final game of the season, Would you rather have Kirk Cousins or Rex Grossman step in?


Personally when I thought about this, I thought about how excited the city would be for the playoffs.  At that point, development would be out the window.  People would want someone there who can win Playoff games.  While Grossman is clearly not the best option at quarterback, he is a veteran who has played in the playoffs.

Should RG3 go out when the team has a bad record, I'd opt for Cousins, but I think I would go with Grossman for the playoffs.

But that is me.  I'm not the typical Redskins fan.  What do you think?  Vote above.

Redskins Players Head To The Practice Bubble To Avoid The Storm

Tuesday afternoon's practice session was cut short after a thunderstorm rolled past Redskins Park bringing in some big lightning strikes.  As the players marched off the field and into the practice bubble, fans realized that their chances of obtaining an autograph were going to disappear.

Before the rain came in, the fans were treated to some one on one WR/CB drills as well as a quick 11 on 11 session.  While Rex Grossman threw passes into triple coverage, RG3 was making much better decisions.

Cooley's training camp woes continued.  Grossman hit Cooley with a nice pass but the tight end fumbled the ball, which makes at least 3 fumbles in training camp so far including one at the one yardline in Monday's scrimmage.

Brandon Banks missed a wide open ball towards the sideline and after it fell off his hands like they were bricks he kicked the ball into the crowd in disgust.  A few plays later he made up for the mistake as he burned a corner for a long touchdown.

Both Terrance Austin & Anthony Armstrong performed well.  Austin has been the biggest deep threat at camp so far.

After about an hour and a half of practice, the storm rolled in and practice was cancelled.  The fans headed out into what turned out to be a half-hour traffic jam.  The rain came and passed just as the last few cars left the parking lot

Training camp starts in a few days, marking the third year of the Shanahan era. With each new training camp comes a new batch of questions regarding the team.  As training camp approaches, we will examine some of these questions.

Will Cousins Unseat Rexy As Backup QB?

Many were shocked when the Redskins used their 4th round pick on a quarterback.  Especially after they already traded so many picks to move up to number 2 overall to draft...a quarterback.

Cousins was viewed by many as a potential starter on the right team, and local commentators went nuts and overreacted after the draft about there already being a “quarterback controversy”. Hyperbole aside, the only real quarterback controversy heading into training camp regards former starter Rex Grossman being the back up vs. newly drafted Cousins.

An argument can be made for both sides. On the one hand, you’ve got Grossman, the veteran QB who’s been in the Shanahan system for years as both a starter and back up.  On the other hand you’ve got the 4th round draft pick who lead his collegiate team to a Big 10 championship during his senior year.

While Rexy didn't lead much last year, the Spartan rookie finished his college career as the all-time touchdown pass leader at MSU, and ranked in the top-10 all time in Big 10 completion percentage.

On paper, it would seem like a win-win, but given the reality of RG3 injury concern, this could potentially be one of the most important decisions coach Shanahan makes during this year’s training camp.

A Fan's Thank You Letter To John Beck

This is a Dear John letter...well, more like a Dear John Beck letter...to thank Mr. Beck for helping the Washington Redskins land RGIII.

Dear John,

I would like to issue you, on behalf of the entire Redskins nation, a sincere thank you.  I know it was not your idea to get roped into the Shanahan’s evil scheme, but thank you for buying into it and playing your part well. 

The plan wouldn’t have worked without the public belief that you were indeed a starting NFL quarterback.  But convincing Redskins fans to believe some hype created by the organization was no problem.

But you must have thought that Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen were joking when they told you, “We want you to be the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins.”  I mean come on!  


Had these “experts” in talent evaluation ever seen you play?  And before you could even question the idea, in walked the evil genius himself, Mike Shanahan, who revealed his Lex Luthorian plan. 

Two QB's in One Draft.....Interesting

With the 102 pick in the 2012 draft the Washington Redskins select......I myself was thinking Offensive Linemen, Inside Linebacker (Since we only have 3 on the roster), or possibly a safety.  I was wrong.  The name Kirk Cousins, not to be mistaken for Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron, was said.  I thought, "another quarterback, really Skins, C'MON!" But after thinking about it for a day, it kind of made sense.  We put all our eggs in the basket (or draft picks for that matter), in on ROOKIE QB, Robert Griffin III, who scrambles and has had knee surgery in the past.  Why not back him up with a quarterback who played in a pro-style offense at Michigan State, who's a tough gritty guy, who was a three time captain (leader), and who improved his yardage and touchdown numbers every year in college.  Griffin could go down any game and I know I would not want to see Grossman trot onto the field to take over.  I would rather have a fresh quarterback who is working to be a possible #1 for another team.

Which goes into the next topic....grooming Cousins into the next Matt Cassel.  Build him up and trade him off.  The Patriots are known for this.  As of right now they have Ryan Mallet on the roster.  There is no way he will ever see the field, but other teams may be interested in what he can do for them.  Look for this preseason to be the Ryan Mallet / Kirk Cousins season.  They will put up good/solid numbers and then put on the trading block to get a high draft pick for the next season for.

Sexy Rexy Returns

Everyone's favorite Washington Redskin, Sexy Rexy, will be returning to the team to be the backup quarterback and mentor to RGIII.  Yikes.  According to Mike Jones of the Washington Post, the Redskins have re-signed RGI Rex Grossman to another one year deal.

I'm guessing the Shannys will tell Rexy that there is a QB competition going into the season and hopefully they don't make the same mistake they did last year and end up starting Rexy in game 1.

I believe that John Beck is under contract for another season, and I don't really know who else would want him.  Can the Skins move him, or do they cut him.  Will they want 3 quarterbacks on the opening day roster?  It will be interesting what happens with Becksy.

One thing is certain, the most disliked QB in the history of the NFL will be back on the Redskins again, possibly influencing our #1 draft pick and the savior of the franchise...

What Do We Do With RG1?

With the Redskins all but already drafting RGIII the question remains, what will happen with RGI, Rex Grossman.  The original RG.  The don.  Sexy Rexy.  The man.  Rex Montana.  Peyton Rexing.

Most likely he will go.  His contract is up.  The coaches like Beck as a backup.  Beck has a contract.  Am I going to write this whole thing in short sentences?  Maybe.

 I'm going to assume they aren't going to bring in a new QB to be the backup because BeckRex knows the offense.  But then again, this is the Redskins, and more importantly and relevant to the issue, this is the Shanahans.  Shanahanation.

Perhaps they will try to bring back Super Bowl QB Rex to "mentor" RGIII.  God help us all, and God help RGIII if that is the case.  It seems to me that Beck could do that, but if the coaches started Rex over Becks, then wouldn't it be a possibility they would have Rex over Becks as the backup QB?

As I mentioned, the contract situation may dictate this whole issue, but what if both guys were free agents?  Would we be having a Rex vs Becks situation again?
